Tacuarembó is a small Uruguayan city located 387 km away from Montevideo, 564 km away from Buenos Aires (through Colon, which is in Entre Rios, an Argentinean province) and 581 km away from Porto Alegre.
The city is world famous because it is the birthplace of Carlos Gardel, the most famous tango singer of all times. Many monuments and a museum pay homage to "Carlitos".
The city was founded in 1832 and has a population of 48,580 people.
Besides the Carlos Gardel Museum, the main attractions of the region include: the Iporá summer resort, Valle Eden valley, Batoví Hill, and the Gruta de los Helechos subterranean cavern.
CARLOS GARDEL MUSEUM
In 1979 the City Hall, in Valle Eden valley, turned the Viejo Almacen or old store in the countryside where Gardel once sang into a museum. They dedicated the museum to his memory and named it after him.
It is located approximately a kilometer away from Route 26, and 23 km. away from Tacuarembó city.
The historical proof of Carlos Gardel´s birthplace is an important part of Tacuarembo´s identity and allows to develop both a historical and cultural objective that is very important to the locals and to Uruguay.
