Fray Bentos is a small city located just 309 km away from Montevideo, 935 km away from Porto Alegre, 273 km away from Buenos Aires and only 9 km away from the bridge that connects Uruguay and Argentina. It was founded on the 16th of April, in 1859, although its beginning dates back to earlier times. It has a population of 23,000 people.
It is located on the Uruguay River, that connects to Entre Rios (an Argentinean province) by an international bridge and has its own overseas port with water that is deep enough to harbor big ships.
Since 2006, the city has become notoriously famous because of the political and environmental conflict that the installation of the Botnia factory has caused. At present, this Finnish company is responsible for the arrival of a great number of Europeans to the city, causing enormous financial growth for all of its population. |
